Daniel Keaney

PhD Researcher , Biosciences, Microbiology (MTU)

Daniel Keaney completed undergraduate studies in Munster Technological University in 2018 as a first class honours Pharmaceutical Biotechnology student (BSc, Level 8) with a period of time spent working in Merck Sharpe & Dohme (MSD) Brinny, Innishannon, Co. Cork, Ireland, as a part of the Process & Analytical Development Department.

Directly upon graduating, I was awarded with the highly competitive RÍSAM Scholarship 2018, in order to continue my work at MTU and branch further into the field of research as a PhD Student.

Currently my research, in which I aim to publish in the near future, is focused on the development of a molecular toolkit for the production of designer bacteria for extraterrestrial applications on Mars.

In my short time in research I have amassed a diverse and multi-disciplinary set of skills and experience, from the development of novel bacteriophage-based gels during my undergraduate final year project, to the use of cGMP systems and different HPLC and protein purifying instruments and softwares during my internship period.

My main interests consist of, but aren’t limited to, Biotechnology, Genetics, Microbiology, Space Travel & Extraterrestrial Microbiology, Bioinformatics, Molecular Biology and Metabolic Pathways, and how these different disciplines can be used to harness the power of bacteria, and mammalian cell culture, for use in food, medicine and even terraforming.
